This is probably one of the oldest shelf queens I still have and haven't started robbing for parts. I've had some motivation lately to move ahead on it, I thought I'd do a quickie blog. I plan to keep it close to me when I'm working on the Tamiya GB subject, and doing similar work on each, where possible, concurrently. Here's a pic of what it looked like when I put it aside a couple of years ago: The lower hull is from the Academy M51, and actually looks more like the -A3 than the -A1 it's supposed to be. I already had the suspension on, and stuck the Tamiya -A3 hull on also. I must have been looking for mojo the day I did the hull welds and needing some mindless task to get me happy. I did an M50 on a Dragon M4A3E8(105) parts kit a little while ago, and that left me with lots of bits, including a complete turret. I also have a Tamiya howitzer turret, not sure which I'll use yet but I cut the turret ring on the hull to fit the Italeri T23 turret some time ago..... so I thought, why not do this: ....instead of this: So now I'm here: I've got enough stuff on hand to do a howitzer tank, but would probably need to pick up another kit to get enough bits to finish a T23 turret. I've also got a few pics of Easy Eight howitzer tanks on T80 tracks rolling through Germany in the closing stages of the war that I thought one would be neat to do and display with the GB model. Hmmm.......
I say go with the 105 version, any way you go it will be cool.
At least your clearing shelf queens, I seem to be creating more
I'm not talking about the non-Sherman stuff I've slid off to the side recently...... I'm thinking 105 too, I've got a lot of bits handy to do it, and I kind of like the look of them. I've even got a turned aluminum barrel, no idea whose....
I'm committed to the 105, started the hull details for a CDA build, pretty late. I scribed the rear-most piece ot the engine cover to give the impression it's two-part, and added the strip between them. I also scrounged up some front lifting eyes from a Dragon kit, filled Tamiya's holes and mounted the eyes in the outboard position appropriate for this hull. I had a brainstorm when it came time to thin the rear light guards: instead of trying to do it while they were on the sprue, or even more tedious, after I'd cut them out of the sprue, I cut them out as-is, glued them to a piece of flat plastic and then went to wok with the files. When done, I simply shaved them off the flat stock and glued them on the hull. Quick and easy and I didn't break any. I wish I'd thought of this a long time ago..... Anyway, a couple of pics: I've also dug out all the remaining bits from the howitzer tank I used to do the M50, so I have everything in hand now, I think.
I had a couple of hours at the bench last night and thought I'd stick some bits on both Shermans. Nice thought until I decided to do the mantlet on the 105...... I remember reading somewhere that Dragon's manltet and rotor were too narrow, and after a couple of measurements and comparing to Tamiya parts on a built model, it's pretty obvious. So out came the razor saw. Each part was sectioned, traced onto plastic and shapes cut out. The parts were then assembled with spacers inserted. Mr.Surfacer and sanding cleaned things back up, and I was able to get the dust cover mounts on, with appropriate spacers from .020" rod inserted. There went my bench time..... I'll be using the Dragon one-piece barrel, it's actually very nice, has rifling in the tube and is more accurate then the old CMK part I had. Pics: Above, from the inside with mantlet mounted. I had to enlarge the hole in the turret as well, and had a couple of small gaps in the corners, filled with Vallejo putty and wiped smooth on the outside. Position of spacers, above. From the front, gaps at top corners of rotor visible. And in. Barrel is glued to mount, should still be centered but won't know for sure till later. Off to Austin for the weekend, and a visit to King's. Yay!
My first 1/16 Sherman is this tank, but as an M4 w/ the 105MM HVSS. Been tempted to alter it to an A3 w/ a T-23 turret but now it's my favorite of my Shermans!
It's a good day to work at the bench today, hope everyone get's going on their Sherman!
Mmmm, progress! Somehow or other, I got some quality Sherman time in this weekend. Fenders, tools, turret bits, mostly Dragon parts but I managed to sneak a couple of MP fender bits in, mainly for strength. I think I have some brass for the fender edges around somewhere. I'm also thinking about using tracks from a Tamiya M51, little better detail on the face. Anyway, pics: There's a few turret bits still to do, and I need to decide on stowage and a fig, but I'm getting close to primer time, I think.... Edit: looks like I had a little too much coffee this morning before I took these pics.
Thankee! I realized a little while ago that I gave away the last of the AFV Club T80 tracks I had so I've got to scrounge around for some spare links for the hull sides, or cobble up some empty mounts. Hmmm.....
Paint! I got the last little bits on Friday night, painted Saturday morning. Krylon gray primer went on first, dried for about 30 mins, then Krylon camo green (the same stuff people hose on deer blinds, old trucks...) and after another 30 mins or so, I came back and did a very light misting of MM OD from a rattle can over the tops and sides, to give a little depth since the MM OD is quite a bit lighter than the Krylon. Pics: And the turret, with my other current Sherman turret in the background. Here's a shot of the underside, gives an idea of how much darker the Krylon is. In all honesty, I like the Krylon green a lot for OD, and would have stayed with it, but I ran out....
A little progress. I got gloss and decals on, used the Dragon kit decals and quickly realized Dragon had based their markings on the tank in the pic in Son of Sherman that I was using for reference. Neat, except for one thing: the pic shows this particular tank with quite a few field mods, like stowage rails on the turret sides, and an extension for the blanket rack on the rear plate. Hmmm, it's a little late to add those things, so the question now is do I model this tank before it got all those additions, or just cover up the name on the turret that identifies this exact tank. Drat. Pics: Ideas? Edit: I should add that the decals are pretty well set with Microsol, so getting them off will mean a re-paint, which I'd like to avoid.
