My Father is disabled and I take him out once a week to get time away from my Mother who has dementia. A doctors visit and a laid back lunch later I got home to find the book Lioness and Lion vol. 2, and the DML M50 kit I ordered had arrived. I was hoping to get some information on the early diesel engine deck, but vol. 2 is about the radial powered tanks. However, the superb pics of the M50 turret make up for the lack of hull details.
I also have a copy of the Son of Sherman on the way. Until I get that I won't know what the upper hull needs.
I plan on cutting off the turret bustle from the DML turret and making a piece that I can cast and attach to any turret. The same for the gun mount. The pics in the L and L book will be a big help there. The vision is to have a castings to use on a Tasca M4A1, or the M4 Comp hull I have on order so no two are exactly alike.
I do not have any clear reference on the underside of the lower hull. Was the underside of the lower hull modified for the diesel? Or, did the lower hull have the access plates from the original tank? I think what I need to know could be in L and L vol. 1. I am trying to locate a copy
I've got the bustle 90% and the gun mount more or less sorted out. There is a big gap on the left side between the turret and the bustle. After casting the bustle will be a bit smaller so the gap will be a bit smaller. From pictures I think this gap was filled in with welds. I got the shape close enough for me. If I decide to change it any more it will be with a casting. After a little more filler on some seams I will tree it up.
The gun mantlet and base are placed based on the drawings in the Lion and Lioness book.
The turret is Tasca, and I cut out the Dragon hull for it.
In the mean time I am working on the HVSS suspension. The new Tamiya 'E8 was listed at around $30.00, or about 1/2 of a DML 'E8. I may decide to use that kit as the HVSS donor next time.
The joys of building! The turret bustle is annoying me, it looks "off". I put most of my day in the suspension.
Would the 'E8 suspension from Taska/Asuka fit any of their hulls? Could I use it on an M4A1 hull? I have a M4A1 partly built up to use as another M50 project and I am curious about the suspension.
I ordered a T/A M4A2 DV spare sprue from Asuka today. It will be used as the hull for this build, probably.
Per the Son of Sherman book, and the Photo Gallery M4A2 book the lower hull on the early M4A2's was welded. No need to add a few hundred rivets.
Detailing the new engine deck. The filler covers are Tasca, as are the bolt heads, off a spare transmission bolt strip. The other deck plates are from left, Academy, Tamiya and Dragon. All are based on the radial engine deck. Mine is off a M4A2 based M50.
Progress has been slow but steady. I did not find any information on if the under side of the hull would be changed with the Cummins diesel so I decided to go with the original hull of an M4A2. The early hulls only had one tow lug, so I added a second based on some pictures. I also filled in the notches in the lower hull and remade the welds using .010 x .020 strips textured with a saw blade.
On the upper hull I removed some welds, and put back one I removed by mistake. I chose an alternate ALCO DV hull front, and I think I need to soften the edge of the bow mg casting. The Tasca applique seems thin, but fit the Dragon hull ok. While waiting for glue to dry I scribed the outline of the loaders hatch in the turret top using a sharp pin Tamiya used to put in the old M60A1 kits to poke holes.
The only snafu was one of the inserts for the DV vanished. I don't have any carpet, but I never found the piece. I used plastic strips to replace both inserts. The applique covers everything anyhow. I used filler and a tooth pick to create the welds on the DV and the applique.
Oops! I discovered the notches in the lower hull are supposed to be there. On tanks converted from vvss the hull was notched by cutting with a torch. So I hacked and textured my fill in plastic to make the torched notches.
I decided to keep the loaders hatch closed so put a .010 thick oval over the scribed area and added a ring around the hatch using solder. Of interest is the hatch on my sample tank was made using the plate cut out during the conversion work.
Right before I got to the turret again I discovered the turret beekster had for sale. I'll try to get one of those for my M4A1 early hull project.
Hey Randy, is that just a strip of styrene on tranny housing to bump back the DML part? Never thought of that. At IMPS show in Nov I usually hang around with Ethan from Desert Armor. He even has me judging nowadays.

The strip is to move the hull contact back and up. This one took a .030 thick strip.
That's a nice simple solution to an annoying problem. I've got a lot of Dragon kits in my stash (who knew Tasca was going to shake up the Sherman game back then) so I'll put that idea away for future reference
This project is one hold for a short while. I don't want to proceed until I can cast up the new deck and some fittings, and I get that book I have on order.
We need a few moments of silence for my Dragon based E8 hull. It is a really bad idea to work on such things while suffering from a sinus infection. I messed it up, and had to put it to sleep.
However, I bit the bullet and got a few E8 Asuka kits, and got a direct vision hull from the Asuka sprues shop. I now have 3 M50's in the early phase of construction. I was curious how the various Asuka kits would come together. There are still a few bugs to sort out, but the project is rising again.
