I noticed that too, but I don't have an answer. But it was a true emotion to touch a Sherman in Bastogne. BTW I'm standing by the punch hole that stopped it.

Hey Guys,
Vary nice set of photos, thanks for sharing with the rest of the SHOP. I'm not 100% sure but I believe the striped star is unit specific marking, but don't recall which unit. I'll do some digging to see what I find, unless of course someone already knows.

My brother's father in-law hit the Normandy beach day+1. When they got in the hedge row country he was transferred to Patton. He said in a Sherman was NO place to be. He really had some stories to tell but he passed away before he could tell them all.

Judgin from the condition of the turret in the first pic (and of another one I saw of a firefly), it ain't hard to believe it.
Yet using those little tin cans the italians called tanks against shermans and grant/lee was even worst, especially in the desert where you have no place to hide...
The stripes on one of the points of the star may make it out to be a tank from the U.S. 11th armoured division which took part in the battle of the bulge. The 11th armoured division used stripes on the various points of the star to denote a specific company in the battalion. One stripe would be A company, 2 stripes B company and so on.The location of the stripes on a specific point of the star would denote the specific battalion. The reason I say may be an 11th armoured division is because none of the battalions used this location on the star to denotes its battalion. Units also put a dot at various locations around the star to denote the platoon. It may be an HQ tank? Of course another famous tank from the same division tank is the well known M4A3E8 called Flat Foot Floogie. Bison decals make a set of these markings.
