The other day while minding my own business conducting online research for an upcoming project I came across several interesting photos of E8s from the 72nd Tank Battalion. While I was looking through the photos I noticed the loaders hatch in the below photo.
Now I’ve never given it any real thought before and always assumed (yes I know what they say) the E8s in Korea would have had the small oval loaders hatch. But the photo above shows what looks like the larger round split loaders hatch. And that got me to wondering if I could find any other photos that show the split loaders hatch. After a bit more research and looking through my files I found the four below
The First photo is really fuzzy but the blobs sort of look like a large split hatch.
The center one shows the loader hatch better and the M39AUV in the foreground pretty much makes this a Korean War Photo.
The Last is by far the best one I found and appears to be the same E8 From the center photo based on the Ammo can Stowage rack on the side of the turret and the antenna arrangement.
So based on these four photos I would say E8s with the large round split loaders hatch did operate in the KTO, though in vary small numbers.
Am I off the mark here? Does anyone have other evidence of this or not? Not sure if I’ll use this on my upcoming E8 KTO build or not, we’ll just have to see. Let’s talk about this and see what we come up with. I’m looking forward to seeing what you all think!

Hey DeafStuG,
Yeah sorry that's my sort-hand for the M4A3E8, which is often referred to as the Easy Eight. After WWII the majority of the surviving M4s received the E8 HVSS Suspension upgrade.

I agree with John, they must be rebuilt tanks. That's really interesting, it's always nice to learn something and Shermans are such a huge field of knowledge
It was my understanding that split hatches were early hatch version of the T-23 turrets. In Korea the Canadians wee issued a few in 1951, used them until 1954.

I agree with the suspensions upgrades If you check the first picture, you'll see that the hull lifting ring are inward not outward and the bullet splash for periscope are the longtype So the hull is in fact, "early glacis pattern" (ended in August 44)
Sorry i don't have my "Son of sherman" here so i can't check the name in it - this is the term use on the sherman minutia website
